Biography

Philip Maurice Jones FISM is a British guitarist and songwriter from Horsham, South East England. Phil teaches acoustic, electric and classical guitar styles to students of all ages and levels in West Sussex. Online guitar and ukulele lessons are also available nationwide.

Phil is both a Fellow of the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) and the European Guitar Teachers Association (EGTA). He is also a long-standing member of the Performing Right Society (PRS). He has been teaching students professionally for over 22 years.

As a published songwriter, Phil has appeared on all 39 local BBC radio stations and performed live on @BBCIntroducing. He has also written and recorded music for TV shows and independent film through out Europe and America.

In addition to guitar, Phil plays both the cello and jazz clarinet and holds a BTEC National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Music Production.

Notable live music performances include intimate sets at the world-famous Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club (London Soho), the Brighton Fringe Festival, the historic Troubadour in Earls Court (London), the legendary Whelan’s of Wexford Street (Dublin) and the iconic Ruby Sessions (Dublin).

Phil currently writes and performs in acclaimed instrumental guitar duo Maurice & Mann.

A Family In Music

For 5 generations, Phil’s family have been involved in music. His Grandfather Maurice Jones was a professional cellist who studied under Arnorld Trowell. For over 28 years his Uncle Walter Jones was the violinist and band leader at Claridges Hotel in London.

Philip’s cousin is five time Emmy Award winning Film/Video Editor and Music Producer David Varga. Philip & David have collaborated on several projects. David writes for NBC, CBS, Discovery, TLC, FOX, MSNBC, CNBC, Netflix and Amazon.

Renowned violinist Rachel Varga is Phil’s second cousin. Rachel has a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Raphael Bronstein, Ariana Bronne and Ani Kavafian. Rachel has performed extensively in Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, as well as in the United States, and in Europe.
